Understanding your result
The number you get is a reference "ideal" weight for your height and gender, not a personal target. A healthy weight range (e.g. BMI 18.5–25) is often more useful than a single number. Use it alongside BMI and body fat % for a fuller picture.
Want to treat this ideal-weight figure as a reference, not a rigid target?Read the guide →Why show a single number and a range?
The Devine formula gives one familiar reference used in many clinical and dietetic settings. The healthy BMI band (18.5–25) shows a wider zone where many adults sit without treating one kilogram as a pass or fail. Together they frame planning without pretending one weight fits everyone.
When to use this calculator
Use it for a quick height-based reference before or beside BMI and body composition tools. It helps frame conversations about weight ranges. It is a poor sole target for athletes with high muscle mass, pregnancy, or clinical conditions that need professional care.
How to read the result
Look at both outputs:
- Devine ideal weight: one reference point from height and gender.
- Healthy range: weights that map to BMI 18.5–25 for your height.
- Context links: BMI and body fat % tools help when muscle or fat share matters more than scale weight alone.
How it's calculated
The Devine formula gives one value based on height (in inches above 5 feet) and gender:
| Gender | Formula |
|---|---|
| Men | 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft (60 in) |
| Women | 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft (60 in) |
Practical tips
- Prefer the healthy range over obsessing over a single kilogram from Devine.
- If you lift heavily, expect scale weight above "ideal" while still being healthy.
- Recheck height if you enter feet and inches. Small height errors move the whole band.
- Use BMI and body fat calculators on this site for composition context, not only this number.
Limitations
The formula does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or age. Very muscular people may weigh more than "ideal" and still be healthy. Use it as a guideline and combine with BMI and body fat % for context.
Devine BJ (1974) and later clinical dosing / dietetic references popularized this height-based ideal weight formula. The BMI 18.5–25 band follows common adult WHO classification for underweight to overweight cutoffs used here only as an educational range.
FAQ
Is this my target weight?
It's a reference, not a personal target. Your best weight depends on build, muscle, and health goals. Combine with BMI and body fat for a fuller picture.
Why Devine?
Devine is widely used in medicine and dietetics. Other formulas (Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) exist and can give slightly different numbers. We use Devine for simplicity.
What if I'm very muscular?
The formula treats all weight the same. If you have a lot of muscle, you may weigh more than the "ideal" number and still be healthy. Rely on BMI range and body fat % as well.
What does the healthy range mean?
It is the weight span for your height that corresponds to BMI 18.5–25 in this tool. It is a screening band, not a guarantee of health.
