Why look at FFMI?

BMI treats all weight the same. FFMI focuses on lean mass relative to height, which is more useful when you train and care about muscle, not only scale weight. Normalized FFMI makes tall and shorter people easier to compare.

When to use this calculator

Use it when you already have a body fat estimate and want a lean-mass index for training context. Pair it with progress photos, strength, and how clothes fit. Do not use it alone to diagnose health, doping, or medical risk.

How to read the result

The page highlights a few numbers. Read them as a set:

  • Normalized FFMI: the main score after the height adjustment.
  • Range label: a rough band (average, above average, high, and so on) for orientation only.
  • Lean mass path: weight and body fat % feed lean mass, then height squared, then the height correction.

How it's calculated

First we get lean mass from weight and body fat %, then divide by height squared. The normalized version adds a height correction:

Lean mass (kg) = weight × (1 − body fat / 100)
FFMI = lean mass (kg) ÷ height² (m)
Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in m)

FFMI depends on your body fat estimate (e.g. from the Navy method). If that estimate is off, FFMI will be too. It's a research and fitness metric, not a substitute for medical advice. Use it to track trends when you measure the same way over time.

FFMI and height-normalized FFMI appear in sports science literature on fat-free mass index (including work associated with Kouri and later discussions of natural athlete ranges). Ranges here are educational summaries, not clinical cutoffs.

What's a good FFMI?

For natural athletes, normalized FFMI often falls in the 22–25 range. Values much higher can be associated with enhanced muscle development. It's a reference, not a health diagnosis.
