What this tool does

It adds up the main cash costs of a car trip in miles and MPG: fuel, plus tolls and food stops you expect along the way. It also splits the total evenly by passenger count.

Why it helps

Fuel trip covers litres and pump math. Travel budget covers lodging and days away. This page answers a narrower question: what might this drive cost in the car, right now, before you leave?

When to use it

  • Comparing two routes or two cars before booking hotels
  • Splitting fuel and tolls fairly among friends
  • Sanity-checking a long weekend drive budget

It does not replace a full travel budget for flights, lodging, or insurance. For that, use the travel budget calculator.

How to read the result

  • Total trip cost is fuel plus any tolls and stops you entered.
  • Fuel line shows pump spend only, from distance, economy, and price.
  • Cost per passenger assumes everyone splits cash costs equally.

Practical tips

  • Use the same economy you expect on highways, not only city driving.
  • Add a buffer in stops if you plan several restaurant breaks.
  • For precise driving time with stops, open the travel time calculator.

How we calculate

With distance D in mi, economy E in MPG, price p per gallon, tolls T, stops S, and n passengers:

V = D ÷ E, fuel cost ≈ p × V, total = fuel + tolls + stops, per person = total ÷ n

Optional speed only estimates pure driving time (distance ÷ speed). It ignores traffic and breaks.

Limits

Economy changes with load, speed, and weather. Toll totals are whatever you type. Prices are not live. Per-person split is even only: it does not track who paid what.

FAQ

How is this different from the fuel trip calculator?

Fuel trip solves distance, litres, and economy when one value is missing. This page assumes you know the leg and adds tolls, stops, passengers, and a total trip view.

Does cost per passenger include everyone in the car?

Yes, if you enter the count of people sharing fuel and extras equally. It does not adjust for children, unequal splits, or one person paying lodging.

Why is driving time optional?

This tool focuses on money. Average speed gives a rough hours-on-road hint. For stop time and arrival clock, use the travel time calculator linked in the form.

Can I leave tolls and stops at zero?

Yes. Zero means you are not adding that category. Fuel still needs distance, economy, and price.
